Commencement Speaker

His Eminence Adam Cardinal Maida Archbishop Emeritus of Detroit

Adam Cardinal Maida has been a supporter of Ave Maria School of Law since its inception and is a distinguished member of its Board of Governors. As a canon and civil lawyer as well as the leader of the Archdiocese of Detroit for 19 years, Cardinal Maida has a deep appreciation for the mission of Ave Maria School of Law and a unique perspective on the importance of integrating faith and reason in the study and practice of law.

Cardinal Maida was named Archbishop of Detroit by Pope John Paul II in 1990 and was elevated to the College of Cardinals in 1994.  He held the position of Archbishop until January 2009.

Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1956, Cardinal Maida holds a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) from St. Mary's University, a Licentiate in Canon Law (J.C.L.) from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, a Doctorate in Civil Law ( J.D.) from Duquesne Law School in Pittsburgh, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.  He was admitted to practice law before the Bar for the State of Pennsylvania, the Federal Bar in Western Pennsylvania, and the United States Supreme Court.

Following his priestly ordination, Cardinal Maida served in the Diocese of Pittsburgh in a number of roles, including as an associate pastor, as Vice Chancellor and General Counsel of the Diocese, in the Diocesan Tribunal, as an Assistant Professor of Theology at La Roche College, and as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Duquesne University Law School. In 1984, he was ordained and installed as the ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Cardinal Maida has served as a member of the Board of Trustees for Catholic University of America and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., as president of the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, and as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Bioethics Center in Braintree, Mass.


Student Commencement Speaker

Mr. Jared Haynie Mr. Jared Haynie

Mr. Jared Haynie has been selected as the Student Commencement Speaker for the 2009 Commencement Exercises.

Jared has been an outstanding student during his time at Ave Maria School of Law, with service to the Honor Board and the Ave Maria Law Review. He held the position of Executive Articles Editor in 2008-09 and Associate Editor for 2007-08. He has served as an extern for the Hon. Richard L. Speer of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio, and was a summer clerk with the firm of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck in Denver, Colorado. He also held the position of Executive Editor of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy from June to September 2008. During his first year, Jared received the Best Appellate Brief award in the St. Thomas More Moot Court Competition as well as an honorable mention for appellate advocacy. Jared is a 2001 cum laude graduate of Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Business Management.

 

Ms. Lauren Werda Ms. Lauren Werda

Ms. Lauren Werda has been selected as the Student Commencement Speaker for the 2009 Commencement Exercises.

Lauren has had an exemplary career at Ave Maria School of Law, serving with distinction as a member of the Moot Court Board, as an SBA Class Representative for 2008-2009, and as President and Sidewalk Counseling Coordinator of the Lex Vitae Society. Lauren was a member of the winning team of the 2008 State of Michigan Moot Court Competition, also receiving individual honors of Best Oralist and 3rd Place Best Brief. During her first year, she was a finalist in the St. Thomas More Moot Court Competition. Lauren received a Blackstone Fellowship after her first summer, completing an internship at the Texas Alliance for Life. She worked for the Liberty Legal Institute/Free Market Foundation in Plano, Texas, during her second summer. She earned a B.A. in Political Science & Spanish (2004) and an Advanced Certificate in International Affairs (2005) from Texas A&M University.
