Professor Alford studied law and legal history at New York University School of Law and the University of Oxford.  His research uses legal history (ancient, medieval, and early modern) to address contemporary constitutional problems, particularly those related to the rule of law.  Prior to entering academia, Professor Alford clerked for the late Robert L. Carter of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Hon. Rosemary S. Pooler of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and practiced law at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton LLP in New York and Brussels, where he worked on international litigation, international commercial arbitration, and cross-border mergers and acquisitions.
