Outcomes – Legal Careers

A Florida law school that works hard to introduce law graduates to the workforce. Ave Maria accept job placements with an array of employers in all regions of the country. Private practice in small firms is the most typical career placement for graduates; however, many graduates choose to begin their legal careers with businesses, public-interest employers, the Military, and government agencies at all levels.

This is one Florida law school that offers a Certified Legal Internship (CLI) Program which is a for-credit internship. Students participating in the fieldwork component of a certified legal internship actually have their own caseloads and appear in court under the supervision of an attorney. They are expected to handle a full range of cases and litigation responsibilities, including client, victim, and witness interviewing, fact investigation, taking and defending in depositions, writing and responding to pretrial motions, handling hearings, engaging in plea negotiations, and are expected to conduct jury and non-jury trials. Students who participate in this program will reap the benefits of having direct litigation experience.

Ave Maria offers this (CLI)  to students who (1) have completed their second year of law school; (2) have registered with the Florida Bar to become a certified legal intern; (3) have obtained an initial clearance letter as to character and fitness from the Florida Bar; and (4) have successfully completed Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Professional Responsibility and Trial Advocacy. Participating students will earn 6 or 12 credits during fall/spring or 10 credits during summer, and will work for a qualifying state agency, such as the State Attorney’s Office or a Public Defender’s Office.

The Law School Career Services Office manages the application and selection process. If you have any questions or seek further information, contact a Career Services staff member at careerservices@avemarialaw.edu.
