Government Ethics and Ethics in Government Seminar Explores Law, Accountability, and Public Trust.

Ave Maria School of Law hosted the Government Ethics and Ethics in Government Seminar today in partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University and the Commission on Ethics and Governmental Integrity for the City of Naples, Florida. The program brought together seasoned professionals and subject matter experts for a wide-ranging discussion on the history, structure and modern challenges of government ethics in Florida and beyond.

The seminar examined the evolution of ethics laws, the role of watchdog agencies, and the ongoing tension between public accountability and political power. Speakers addressed issues of public corruption, enforcement mechanisms, and the essential role ethics institutions play in preserving integrity in government.

A featured presenter was Professor Connolly, director of the Robert L. Smith Business Law Institute at Ave Maria School of Law, who delivered a presentation titled Federal Criminal Law and Politics. His talk explored the growing intersection of federal criminal law, political leadership and public ethics, examining high-profile indictments and how federal prosecutions shape the modern political landscape.

Drawing on his extensive background in corporate law, criminal defense and federal litigation, Professor Connolly offered insight into why political figures increasingly find themselves under federal scrutiny and how criminal law operates as a powerful mechanism for enforcing ethical standards in public life.

The seminar provided students, faculty, legal professionals and community members with a timely and practical examination of the legal frameworks that safeguard democratic institutions and promote transparency in public service.
