The men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces deserve the honor, respect, and thanks of a grateful nation. Ave Maria School of Law honors those who have served our country and provides financial assistance to help pay for the cost of attendance at the Law School.

Veterans eligible for Post 9/11 (Chapter 33) GI Bill benefits at the 100% level may also be eligible for Yellow Ribbon benefits from both the VA and Ave Maria School of Law.  These combined benefits can provide veterans who qualify with a cost-free legal education in addition to funds for housing and books.

Ave Maria Law also provides scholarships to eligible veterans who don’t qualify for the Chapter 33/Yellow Ribbon package of benefits.  Any veteran of the U. S. Armed Forces who received an honorable or a general discharge can request a veteran scholarship when they are admitted to law school.  The veteran scholarship amount depends on the funds available each year.

Florida has the third largest population of veterans in the nation, with more than 1.5 million veterans. Our goal is to serve veterans in Southwest Florida with dignity and to provide financial assistance to help pay for the cost of education here. Ave Maria School of Law has a long tradition of honoring our military veterans. We are proud of our many students and alumni who are veterans.  Three of our faculty members served with distinction as JAG officers, including our current Dean and our Dean Emeritus.  Our founder, Mr. Thomas Monaghan, is a Marine veteran, and several members of the Board of Governors are also veterans.

Which veterans are eligible for Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits?

You may be eligible if you served at least 90 aggregate days on active duty* after September 10, 2001, or were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability after serving 30 continuous days following September 10, 2001.

What will I receive?

You may receive a percentage of the following payments (see chart):

  • A Tuition and Fee payment that is paid to your school on your behalf
  • A Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA)** that is equal to:
  • the basic allowance for housing (BAH) payable for the zip code of your school to a military E-5 with dependents for students pursuing resident training
  • one-half the BAH national average for students training solely by distance learning
  • the national average BAH for students pursuing training at foreign schools
  • A Books and Supplies Stipend of up to $1000 per year

How many months of assistance can I receive and how long am I eligible?

Generally, you may receive up to 36 months of entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. You will be eligible for benefits for 15 years from your last period of active duty of at least 90 consecutive days. 

What kind of training can I take?

You can use the Post-9/11 GI Bill at colleges, universities, trade schools, and for on-the-job training, apprenticeships, and flight schools. To see what programs are currently approved for VA benefits, go to the VA website at http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/.  You can use the Post-9/11 GI Bill for tutorial assistance, licensing (attorney license, cosmetology license, etc.) and certification tests (SAT, LSAT, etc.)

CAN I TRANSFER MY ENTITLEMENT TO MY DEPENDENTS?

You must be a member of the uniformed services to transfer your unused benefits to your spouse or dependent(s). Generally, you must agree to serve four more years when transferring benefits. 

Yellow Ribbon Benefits

The Post-9/11 GI Bill can cover all in-state tuition and fees at public degree granting schools, but may not cover all of the tuition and fees at private degree granting schools or out-of-state tuition charged by public institutions. The Yellow Ribbon Program provides additional support in those situations. Institutions voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund charges that are uncovered by the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The VA matches each dollar of unmet charges the institution agrees to contribute, up to the total cost of the tuition and fees. The Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the law that created the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The Yellow Ribbon Program is available for Institutions of Higher Learning (degree granting institutions) in the U.S. or at a branch of such institution located outside the U.S. The program allows approved institutions of higher learning and the VA to partially or fully fund tuition and fee expenses that exceed the established thresholds under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

IF I AM ELIGIBLE FOR THE POST‐9/11 GI BILL, AM I AUTOMATICALLY ELIGIBLE FOR THE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM?

Only Veterans (or dependents under Transfer of Entitlement) at the 100% benefit level qualify. Active duty members and spouses thereof are not eligible for this program. In addition, the institution must be approved to participate in the program, and you must apply to the school.

Ave Maria School of Law is an approved institution under the Yellow Ribbon program.

HOW DO I KNOW WHETHER THE SCHOOL I WANT TO ATTEND PARTICIPATES IN THE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM?

Ave Maria School of Law is an approved institution under the Yellow Ribbon program.

IF THE SCHOOL I PLAN TO ATTEND PARTICIPATES IN THE PROGRAM, CAN I COUNT ON BEING IN THE PROGRAM?

The school’s agreement with the VA may limit the number of participants in the program and is determined on a first-come, first-served basis. You must apply to the school. The school will notify each student accepted into the Yellow Ribbon Program.

Ave Maria School of Law does not limit the number of eligible veterans who may participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

IF THE SCHOOL I PLAN TO ATTEND PARTICIPATES IN THE PROGRAM, DO ALL PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM BENEFITS?

Not necessarily. Schools have the flexibility to designate the number of students and contributions based on student status (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral) and college or professional school. For example, the school could specify $1,000 for undergraduates, $1,500 for graduate students and $2,000 for doctoral students. The school also could specify $1,800 for students in the school of engineering and $2,500 for students in the school of nursing.

At Ave Maria School of Law, all eligible veterans who participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program receive the same maximum benefit amount. 

IF I PARTICIPATE IN THE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM THIS YEAR, WILL I AUTOMATICALLY BE IN THE PROGRAM NEXT YEAR?

  • Not necessarily. Yellow Ribbon Program agreements must be in effect for each year. A school with an approved agreement with VA must continue to offer it to you in subsequent years as long as the following conditions apply:
  • The school continues to participate in the program;
  • You maintain satisfactory progress towards completion of your program;
  • You remain continuously enrolled (per school’s policy); and
  • You have remaining entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

If you transfer to another school, the new school would have to participate in the program and accept your application; the first school’s decision has no bearing on the second school.

  • Ave Maria School of Law agrees to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program each year. Eligible student must maintain satisfactory academic progress and have remaining entitlement at the 100% level under Chapter 33 (the Post-9/11 GI Bill). 

IF I PARTICIPATE IN THE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM THIS YEAR, WILL I AUTOMATICALLY BE GUARANTEED THE SAME MATCHING CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE SCHOOL AND VA FOR SUBSEQUENT YEARS (PROVIDED THE ABOVE CONDITIONS STILL APPLY)?

  • The school may choose to contribute a different amount for subsequent years.
  • Ave Maria School of Law will offer the maximum benefit amount to eligible veterans during their enrollment at AMSL.

WILL ALL OF MY TUITION AND FEES BE PAID FOR IF MY SCHOOL PARTICIPATES IN THE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM?

  • Not necessarily. The school’s agreement with the VA specifies an amount the school will contribute (and VA will match) to make up all or part of the difference between what the Post-9/11 GI Bill will pay and the unmet tuition and fees charges. In addition, the school’s agreement with the VA may specify only certain colleges and/or professional schools, and/or undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral level programs. The list of schools on the website will include specific information on each school’s agreement with VA.
  • Ave Maria School of Law has agreed to fund all eligible veterans who participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program at the maximum benefit level. 

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A PORTION OF MY TUITION AND FEES IS ALREADY MET THROUGH STATE OR INSTITUTIONAL WAIVERS?

  • The amount of tuition and fees charged, minus any aid specifically designated for the sole purpose of defraying tuition and fees, will be used to determine the amount payable under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The unmet charges may be covered in part or entirely through equal Yellow Ribbon Program contributions from the school and VA.
  • At Ave Maria School of Law, our goal is to provide eligible veterans with post-9/11 GI Bill benefits at the 100% level, with a legal education that is tuition and fee free. For the 2016-17 award year, full-time tuition at AMSL is $39.450 and fees are $2,256; that’s a total of $41,706 for tuition and fees.  Veterans who are eligible for post-9/11 BI benefits at the 100% level and the Yellow Ribbon program would be eligible for the following benefit amounts at AMSL: 
Post-9/11 GI benefits (Chapter 33):     $ 21,970.
VA Yellow Ribbon benefit:   $  9,868.
AMSL Yellow Ribbon benefit:   $  9,868.
Total tuition and fee benefits: $41,706.
Housing payment from the VA ($1,692/month) $15,228.
Payment for Books from the VA$   1,000.
Total VA related benefits        $57,934.   

WHAT FEES WILL BE COVERED BY YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM FUNDS?

  • All mandatory fees for a student’s program of education may be included. Any fees that are not mandatory, such as room and board, study abroad (unless the study abroad course is a requirement for the degree program), and penalty fees (such as late registration, return check fees, and parking fines) cannot be included. These fees are not payable under the Yellow Ribbon Program or under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
  • At Ave Maria School of Law, tuition and all mandatory fees are used in the calculation of the Yellow Ribbon award.

DO I HAVE TO ATTEND FULL-TIME TO BE IN THE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM?

  • You do not have to attend full-time.
  • At Ave Maria School of Law, all students, including veterans, are required to attend full-time.

HOW WILL I KNOW FOR SURE THAT I AM ELIGIBLE FOR THE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM? WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO APPLY?

  • If you submit an application for the Post-9/11 GI Bill to VA and are eligible at the 100% benefit level, VA will issue you a Certificate of Eligibility advising that you are potentially eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program. You should provide your Certificate of Eligibility to the school which, in turn, will determine if there are slots available for the Yellow Ribbon Program (based on its agreement with the VA). If your school has already sent us an enrollment certification, and it is processed at the same time as your application, your award letter will also display your benefit level. The school is responsible for notifying you whether or not you are accepted and approved for the Yellow Ribbon Program. The school then submits an enrollment form to VA, certifying information that is used to make payment to the school for tuition and fees and for Yellow Ribbon Program payments.
  • At Ave Maria School of Law, the Registrar is the School Certifying Official (SCO) for VA benefits. Veterans who are accepted for admission at Ave Maria School of Law should provide a copy of their DD-214 and their Certificate of Eligibility from the VA to the Registrar.  The Certificate of Eligibility will confirm whether the veteran is eligible for post-9/11 GI Bill benefits at the 100% level.  The Registrar will then be able to confirm Yellow Ribbon eligibility.

HOW WOULD I KNOW IF THE SCHOOL I AM ATTENDING WOULD DISCONTINUE ITS PARTICIPATION IN THE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM FOR SUBSEQUENT YEARS?

  • The school must inform its students of discontinued participation.
  • Ave Maria School of Law is committed to remaining in the Yellow Ribbon Program and offering benefits at the maximum level for all eligible veterans who are admitted to the Law School.

CAN I RECEIVE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM FUNDS FOR THE SUMMER TERM?

  • Yes, if the school still has Yellow Ribbon Program funds available for the per student maximum contribution for summer term.
  • Ave Maria School of Law will match the VA Yellow Benefit for eligible veterans who register during the summer semester.

IF I REDUCE MY COURSE LOAD, HOW WILL MY PAYMENTS CHANGE?

  • The contributions from the school and VA would be reduced. Refunds are based on the school’s refund policy, and you would be liable to VA for any resulting overpayments.
  • At Ave Maria School of Law, all students including veterans are required to maintain a full-time course load. 

IF I LEAVE MY SCHOOL BUT RETURN AFTER A SEMESTER, AM I STILL APPROVED FOR THE YELLOW RIBBON PROGRAM?

  • The school must continue to offer the Yellow Ribbon Program to you provided that the school continues to participate in the program, you maintain satisfactory progress, and you remain continuously enrolled. The definition of continuous enrollment is dictated by the school’s policy and determines your continued eligibility for the Yellow Ribbon Program.
  • At Ave Maria School of Law, students who wish to interrupt their enrollment may request a leave of absence for up to one year. Written approval from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is required.  If the leave of absence is approved, eligibility for Yellow Ribbon benefits would continue as long as the veteran met all other eligibility requirements.
