Ave Maria Law Alumnus Peter Mansfield ’03 Nominated to Federal Bench
President Trump nominates 2003 graduate to U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana
Ave Maria School of Law is proud to recognize alumnus Peter Mansfield ’03 following President Donald Trump’s nomination of Mansfield to serve as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Mansfield has spent more than two decades as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in New Orleans and currently serves as Chief of the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana. He previously served as First Assistant U.S. Attorney.
In announcing the nomination via Truth Social on Aug. 18, President Trump highlighted Mansfield’s long record of public service as well as his legal education at Ave Maria School of Law. Mansfield earned his undergraduate degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville before receiving his J.D. from Ave Maria Law in 2003.
“Peter Mansfield’s nomination to the federal bench is a tremendous honor and a testament to a career devoted to public service and the law,” said Dean John Czarnetzky. “We are proud to see a member of Ave Maria Law’s Class of 2003 recognized after more than two decades of distinguished federal service.”
Mansfield has built a career in federal service that includes extensive civil litigation and leadership within the U.S. Attorney’s Office. His service within the Eastern District of Louisiana has also extended beyond litigation. He has represented the U.S. attorney general during federal naturalization proceedings and participated in legal education and community outreach. In 2025, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana appointed him vice chair of its Lawyer Disciplinary Committee.
Mansfield graduated during the early years of Ave Maria School of Law, which was founded in 1999 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a member of the Class of 2003, he was among the school’s earliest graduates.
President Trump announced Mansfield’s nomination along with eight other nominees for federal district court judgeships across six states. In his announcement, the president noted that Mansfield has the support of Louisiana Sens. John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy.
The nomination is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
Ave Maria School of Law congratulates Peter Mansfield ’03 on this significant recognition and his more than two decades of service to the law and the nation.
