Ave Maria School of Law Celebrates
St. John Henry Newman’s Elevation as Doctor of the Church
Ave Maria School of Law rejoices in the historic announcement from the Holy See that St. John Henry Newman will soon be formally proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. This rare and profound honor places Newman among only a select group of saints throughout history recognized for their extraordinary contribution to Catholic teaching, spirituality, and theological wisdom.
Newman, canonized by Pope Francis in 2019, has long been a towering figure in Catholic thought. His writings on conscience, truth, faith, and reason have shaped generations of believers and stand as a bridge between faith and intellect. His chosen motto, Cor ad cor loquitur—“Heart speaks to heart”—reflects his conviction that authentic faith is not merely intellectual assent, but a living dialogue with Christ at the core of human life.
At Ave Maria School of Law, Newman’s legacy holds a special place of honor. We are the only law school in the United States to be recognized and recommended by the Cardinal Newman Society in its Newman Guide, a distinction that affirms our fidelity to the Catholic intellectual tradition Newman himself so powerfully embodied. The Newman Guide highlights colleges and universities that uphold and strengthen Catholic identity, ensuring students are formed not only as professionals, but as faithful witnesses to truth.
This connection is especially meaningful as Newman now takes his place among the Doctors of the Church. His commitment to faith and reason resonates deeply with Ave Maria’s mission, expressed in our motto Fides et Ratio. Like Newman, we believe the pursuit of truth in law and in life must be informed by both rigorous intellect and a heart open to God.
Dean John Czarnetzky reflected, “St. John Henry Newman’s elevation as a Doctor of the Church underscores the vital importance of faith and reason working together in service of truth. As a law school guided by the Newman Society, Ave Maria is honored to walk in his intellectual and spiritual footsteps.”
As the universal Church prepares to celebrate this milestone, Ave Maria School of Law is proud to reaffirm its place within the Newman tradition—dedicated to forming lawyers who, inspired by faith and reason, are ready to serve with wisdom, integrity, and a heart for justice.
What Does “Doctor of the Church” Mean?
The title Doctor of the Church is one of the highest honors the Catholic Church can bestow on a saint. It is reserved for men and women whose writings, teachings, and holiness have made a profound and lasting impact on the universal Church.
Doctors of the Church are recognized not only for their personal sanctity but also for the depth and authority of their theological insight. The title is conferred by the Pope, often through a formal proclamation or apostolic letter, and sometimes celebrated at a papal Mass.
There are currently just over three dozen Doctors of the Church, including St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Teresa of Ávila, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux. With his forthcoming proclamation, St. John Henry Newman will join this distinguished company as one of the few modern voices to receive the title.
Ave Maria School of Law is a Catholic law school dedicated to educating lawyers with the finest professional skills. Inspired by Pope John Paul II’s encyclical Fides et Ratio, Ave Maria School of Law offers a distinctive legal education — an education characterized by the harmony of faith and reason. Formed by outstanding professional training and a distinctive educational philosophy, Ave Maria’s graduates are equipped for leading positions in law firms, corporate legal offices, the judiciary, and national, state, and local government.
Our mission is to offer an outstanding legal education in fidelity to the Catholic Faith, as expressed through Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture, and the teaching authority of the Church. University legal education began in Catholic universities, and Catholic law schools have been the bearers of a tradition that safeguards the dignity of the human person and the common good. Ave Maria School of Law affirms Catholic legal education’s traditional emphasis on the only secure foundation for human freedom — the natural law written on the heart of every human being. We affirm the need for society to rediscover those human and moral truths that flow from the nature of the human person and that safeguard human freedom.
